Family crest tile
The family crests that only exist in Japan. Do you know your own family crest?
A family crest, known as "kamon," is a symbol that has been used since around the Heian period to represent one's lineage (family, bloodline, status). In an era when literacy was low, family crests, which could be easily recognized at a glance even if one could not read the family name, were widely incorporated into daily life, appearing on clothing, furnishings, gates, and graves as a substitute for surnames. Currently, it is said that there are 241 types and over 5,116 family crests in Japan, with almost every household having at least one. The designs of family crests include flowers, plants, animals, celestial bodies, geography, weather, furnishings, weapons, letters, and geometric patterns, making them enjoyable to look at.
